Guangzhou Institute of Physical Education (Guangzhou Sport University), founded in July 1956, is the only sports undergraduate institution of higher learning in South China. It is also one of the earliest institutions specializing in physical education in China since the founding of the People's Republic of China. It is affiliated to the People's Government of Guangdong Province. It is a university with the right to grant a master's degree in the first-level discipline of physical education (including master's degree in all secondary disciplines of physical education) and a master's degree in sports medicine in the medical category. It is the on-the-job training unit for high, middle and junior coaches of several sports events of the State General Administration of Sports, with the right of examination and approval of first-class referees and first-class athletes.

In 2003, our school took the lead in the establishment of sports art department in the national sports colleges, is now renamed sports art college. At present, dance majors (dance education direction), performance majors (fashion performance) and dance performance majors (modern dance direction, sports dance direction-aerobics, cheerleading, sports dance, popular rhythmic gymnastics) are set up. There are 45 professional teachers, including 5 professors, 13 associate professors, 19 lecturers and 8 teaching assistants. There are 4 doctoral students and 24 master students, accounting for 53.33 per cent of the total number of teachers. In the past five years, the teachers of our college have presided over 6 national-level topics, 13 provincial-and ministerial-level topics, and 46 school-level topics. They edited and participated in the compilation of 12 sets of textbooks and monographs, 1 horizontal topic, and published academic papers. More than 100 articles. After more than ten years of unremitting efforts, the talent training plan has been formulated four times.
